Ryu Enma

Born and raised on the fringe skirts of Ashikaga Ryu grew up with seven brothers and sisters. His family was once one of the noble families that protected the city, their sword style prominently being taught to most of the citizens. His father was constantly praised as one of the great swordsman of his era with lords bringing their children to study under him. Enma never had much skill with weapons and it was clear from a young age that he would not be the successor to the sword style when he was older. Unfortunately his family would never get to see the full rise of their name as his dad was caught in a scandal cooked up by other schools of discipline for fear that they would be forgotten to time. Word traveled fast that his father would touch his younger students in unprofessional ways and young children were even bribed to recount times and places this happened. Even with his fathers renown and influence they were not able to deny all the accusations and eventually the backlash became so much that his mother committed suicide and the rest of the family was forced to leave the city in fear of being attacked in the night.

The years to come after were harsh and led to the slow starvation of his large family. Ryu lost brothers to murder as they were robbed for their cloths and anything else on them of value. He watched on slowly as his father withered away into nothing as he fell deeper into depression even withdrawing from talking to his own children. It pained Ryu that he could do nothing for the health or the stability of his family. With each passing day he would curse his existence as he looked on with nothing to provide. Some times a roaming doctor would appear on the outskirts of the village and tend to those too poor to get attention on their own. Enma began to look forward to these times and would follow the doctor around providing assistance and learning the trade as best as he could. He would ask some questions whenever the doctor didn't seem to be busy so he could gleam some more knowledge about the human body. As he learned, he would take the information that he gained and use it to treat his family as best he could with the limited supplies he was given from the doctor for helping. Each time though it was too late, a brother or sister would succumb to a sickness or be stolen away to work in a brothel in some distant city never to be seen again. Ryu had grown so used to his father not coming out from his room for days on at a time that when the older male didn't come out for five days he didn't think anything of it. On the sixth day he would always check on the old man himself to ensure he would eat and drink the bare minimum to keep himself alive except this time what he saw was his father slumped over on his knees. Dried blood was pooled around the frail figure, a rusted brittle blade still held in hand pointed inwards digging into his fathers midsection. Ryu didn't cry, he didn't show sorrow or disbelief, the grief had run out and he had nothing left to give in emotion. He was alone now everyone had left and the knowledge he gained to protect and care for his family held no weight anymore, no one was here.

Ryu met Akani when he roamed the city, drunk, his stupor leading him stumbling down an unbeaten path. The path led him through over growth and wildlife that had taken back over what he assumed used to be a well traveled area till he came upon a beaten down estate after crossing a threshold of glowing purple flowers hanging from trees and strewn about. A single light illuminated a room in the estate which he investigated to be a woman sitting alone in a disheveled room with papers, mold, broken clay and other things were thrown about. It was evident that no one had been here for sometime. The woman turned her eyes upon him with no visible concern on her face which was strange even to him under the effects of alcohol. That night they both sat and talked as if they were long lost friends, she listed to his life with great intent and he listed to her tales with the same vigor. The things she talked about and the information she had to back it up as fact shocked him, what caught his eyes and attention the most were the medical documents that she mentioned. There used to be a highly functioning medical group working with another group of people involved in direct combat with things he had never heard of.

Ryu didn't want to leave with the knowledge that he could do something with the medical know how that he had and chose not to do anything. During the next weeks and coming months they both studied together the infrastructure that this group had made and how it all worked together. Enma knew nothing of demons but he knew humans and he knew he wanted to ensure he did the best he could to keep them alive and never have to go through the loss of life again. Now he heads the Kakushi, teaching them how to heal the body and to those that master those skills he works hand and hand with to bolster their skills and increase their effectiveness on the field.
